A little help with Sorted.
Sorted keeps your Mac’s downloads organized with suggested names, categories, and optional automatic organizing. Need a hand? Contact Thomas, the developer.

Getting started
Follow the welcome guide and choose the folder to watch. Your inbox shows current and proposed filenames and the full destination. Suggestions prepare when downloads finish; Organize moves the selected visible files and applies their proposed names. Start Sorted when I log in is an optional onboarding choice, also available in Settings. Reopen the welcome guide from the sidebar anytime.
Where did my file go?
Search History by the original or new filename. It shows the last recorded location, with Open and Reveal controls. By default files go into a Sorted folder inside the folder you selected, grouped by category. Category settings can choose another destination on the same disk.
Undo and Restore
Undo returns an unchanged filed download to its original folder, then keeps it in place. Restore does the same for a file moved to Trash, while that file remains available. If another file has taken the old name or the file changed, Sorted leaves it alone and explains the issue. History is a record of moves, not a backup of file contents.
Automatic filing and cleanup
Both are off by default. In a category’s settings, choose Organize → Automatically and how long to wait. There is no second enable switch. Automatic organizing uses the suggested name and destination, just like clicking Organize. Existing downloads, uncertain matches, and your edits wait for a click.
Scheduled cleanup is a separate category preference. It can move unchanged files filed by Sorted to Trash after 7, 30, or 90 days. Existing filed files receive a full waiting period when you enable the rule. Sorted never empties Trash. Pause automatic organizing stops automatic moves and cleanup. Downloads remain visible and suggestions continue preparing. Closing the window leaves Sorted running in the menu bar; Quit stops it.
Smart names aren’t available
Sorted requires an Apple-silicon Mac running macOS 26 or later. Smart document suggestions require Apple Intelligence to be enabled and its on-device model to be available for your device, language, and region. Check the model status in Sorted’s Settings. You can still file by type and edit filenames manually when the model is unavailable.
PDF text and scanned-page recognition are processed locally. Sorted samples up to the first five pages of supported PDFs, so check the suggested name before filing. Images receive filename cleanup; Sorted does not identify objects in photos.
A file stays in place
Check the file’s status in your inbox or Kept in place for an explanation. New downloads appear in the menu bar even when automatic organizing is off. Incomplete downloads, archives, media and project formats, links, packages, and unsupported files remain where they are. Sorted watches files directly inside your chosen folder, not inside existing subfolders. For a file you deliberately kept, use its menu to allow organization again.
Folder access needs attention
Choose the watched folder again, or reopen the category’s settings and select its destination. If a folder is on an unavailable disk, reconnect it first. Sorted does not need Full Disk Access. Keep your local history if you still need Undo.
Purchases
Sorted is a one-time paid download, with no subscription or in-app purchases. Apple handles App Store purchases and refunds. Get help with an Apple purchase.
Reporting a problem
Include your macOS version, Sorted version, and the steps that led to the issue. A screenshot can help; hide private filenames and document contents. Please don’t send private documents unless they are needed to resolve your question.
